2009 - December Newsletter - A Year in Review
2009 was the first recession I have ever experienced not only as a consumer, but as a business owner. 2009 was a year of caution, and a year we survived.After weeks of preparation in the greenhouses and the yard, our staff and I were ready for a flawless spring season. However, this was not to be, and the recession would prove to be the least of our challenges.
On February 12, 2009, the unbelievable happened. A day of eager preparation in our greenhouses and in the flower shop for Valentine’s Day became a day of tragedy. All Seasons Nursery and Flowers fell victim to the flooding of the Sydenham River. We watched helplessly as the river flowed past the doors and eventually through the store. The property was 6’ 3” underwater. My staff and I had to be rescued by a tractor.
The following day, we assessed the damage. What was generally and exciting time of year was devastating disaster everywhere.
It took months to clean up. The simplest tasks could not be done because we were battling extreme cold and record snowfall. As customers were coming out of dormancy, we were still cleaning and repairing while setting up for spring. So, to all our loyal customers, thank you for standing by us in 2009, and we can’t wait to give you something to be excited about in 2010.
